Gold Star Banner Ceremony
American Legion Post 148 of Windham, Post 155 of Naples and Legion Department of Maine will be conducting a Gold Star Banner Ceremony to honor the families of fallen serviceman from Cumberland County since 2001 in the Mideast and Afghanistan wars. The ceremony will be held at the Naples Memorial Post on Route 11, Naples, on Saturday, Oct. 15, commencing with a brunch at 1 p.m. Twelve recipient families will be honored. The Windham Connection is the loss of SSG Craig Cherry, who grew up in Windham and whose family currently lives in Westbrook. Craig joined the service with the Virginia National Guard and was killed in action in Afghanistan on Aug. 7, 2004. For more information, contact Legion Post Adjutant Dave Tanguay, 892-1306.
Home Alone safety
Windham Parks & Recreation will present a “Home Alone Safety Course” on Oct. 19 from 2:15-5 p.m. at Town Hall gym. This course is designed for 6th-8th graders. Participants will talk about and find solutions to a variety of “home alone” issues, including food preparation, safe internet and phone usage and stranger-danger. They will also learn basic first aid skills as well as how to identify potential hazards and what to do in an emergency. The fee is $25 fee. Call 892-1905 for more information.
Good Shepherd Food Mobile
On Tuesday, Nov. 1, the Good Shepherd Food Mobile will be at the Food Pantry from 10-11:30 a.m. Bring your own bags or boxes. The Food Pantry is on Route 202, next to the Public Safety Building and across from Friends Meetinghouse.
Country-western concert
A country-western concert featuring Lou and Maureen Mathieu will be held Saturday, Oct. 29, at the Windham Veterans Center. A bean supper will be served from 5-6:30 p.m. with the concert at 7 p.m. Admission will be $8 for the supper, $10 for the concert or $15 for both. Proceeds will benefit the Maine Country Music Hall of Fame and Windham Veterans Center. For more information, call Dick at 310-0390.
‘Zany, Majestic Bard’
Join the Windham Public Library, Windham High School Library and Raymond Village Library as they collaborate to present David Greenham in “The Zany, Majestic Bard,” a lively show that celebrates the works of Shakespeare, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 20. Greenham’s fast-paced, educational and fun performance will delight and surprise audiences of all ages. The program, which is free and open to the public, is made possible by the support of the Maine State Library and Maine Humanities Council, and will be held at the Windham High School Performing Arts Center. Thanksgiving baskets
The Windham Food Pantry will be taking requests for Thanksgiving baskets until Nov. 3. That’s the last day for sign up which is at the pantry. Sign-ups cannot be done by phone and proof of residency is required. The food pantry is the building next door to the Public Safety building and across the street from the Friends Meeting House.

Halloween costume?
The North Windham Union Church Thrift Shop is having a half-price sale on anything orange throughout the month of October. Come on by on Wednesdays from 1-3 p.m., Thursdays 1-3 p.m. or Saturdays from 10 a.m. until noon. You might find a great Halloween costume. The Thrift Shop sells clothing, children’s items, household goods, books, craft items and more and is located at the church, near the corner of Route 302 and 115.
Veterans Coffee Break
Every Wednesday, a Veterans Coffee Break is held from 9-11 a.m. at Windham Veterans Center. All veterans welcome to stop by and take a break from the day’s routine, visit with old or new friends and find out what’s new.
Medicare Open Enrollment
One-on-one counseling with volunteer Medicare advocates is available from 9 a.m. to noon on each Tuesday from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church at 919 Roosevelt Trail, Windham, from 10 a.m. to noon. This is the Medicare Open Enrollment Period, and it’s your chance to find out about your lowest cost options for 2017 and perhaps change your Medicare Drug Plan or Medicare Advantage Plan. During a celebration of Feast Day of the Patron Saint of Animals, Saint Francis of Assisi, Father John McHugh of Saint Joseph’s College blesses Ollie, a King Charles spaniel owned by Patricia Ireland of Windham. The blessing ceremony for pets and farm animals took place on the college campus.
