Last Friday evening, there was a Candidates’ Night at York Public Library. Deborah McDermott of the York Weekly was the moderator. The six candidates present were running for state Senate and Legislature, and included Bradley Moulton and Patty Hymanson.
Mr. Moulton hopes to unseat Representative Hymanson in District 4, which includes the west side of York, all of Ogunquit, and parts of Wells and Sanford.
All candidates were asked to introduce themselves. Mr. Moulton spoke fifth, and used his time to berate the moderator and rehash their long-past disputes. At the end of his comments, he rose from his seat and left the room before the real discussion even began, saying he would leave a written statement about his grievances in the lobby.
He said nothing about his ideas, community life, current issues, political priorities or why he deserves our votes. How can voters judge his fitness for office? And how would he work in a bipartisan fashion with 150 other legislators if he won’t even remain in the room with five other candidates?
Patty Hymanson gave cogent, thoughtful, practical answers to all questions, and has been an excellent representative for our towns. Please vote to reelect her to the Legislature.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
