You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind and with all your strength, and you shall love your neighbor as yourself. Mark 12:30

Love thy Neighbor

We are all made in the image of God, and the love of mankind is firmly rooted the in the love of God. The whole of scripture is grounded in the above commandments. Miss these, Jesus implies, and you have missed it all. Together they form the basis on which everything else depends. We are to love our neighbors as ourselves, Jesus says. But who is our neighbor? Jesus illustrates this with the parable of The Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) In other words, our neighbor is every person we come in contact with. In our baptism we vow to respect the dignity of every human being, which means that we must treat our fellow human beings with the same respect that we ourselves expect to receive from others. Do we feel that we still have worth and deserve love even when we make terrible mistakes? Do we give ourselves another chance? If so, then perhaps we need to remember to cut a little slack for our neighbors. We are all in this life together, and we are all one when we come together in the love of God.
