The Bowdoin College and Bates men’s soccer teams exchanged goals in the final 11 minutes of regulation and ended in a 1-1 deadlock on Tuesday afternoon at Pickard Field.
The Polar Bears moved to 3-1- 1 (1-1-1 NESCAC) this season, while the Bobcats stand at 2-2-2 (0-2-1 NESCAC) .
The teams traded great chances in the opening half, including a fantastic opportunity for Bates with under 18 minutes to go in the period. Eric Opoku came loose on the left side of the box and curved a hard shot towards the right post that was swept aside by Bowdoin’s Stevie Van Siclen (five saves). Bates’ Robbie Montanaro (seven stops) returned the favor with 10:30 remaining in the half as a header by Bowdoin’s Moctar Niang seemed destined for the net, only to be punched out by the Bobcat netminder, sending the game scoreless into the half.
Bowdoin looked to secure the win with 10:31 left in regulation after a lengthy possession saw Ethan Ellsworth rifle a low, hard shot towards Montanaro. The Bates netminder made the initial stop, but the ball bounced loose in front where Levi Morant hammered home the rebound to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
Bowdoin will travel to Middlebury for an 11 a.m. contest on Saturday.
