Sojoy and the Annex Contemporary Dance Company will combine their artistic talents; their collaboration results in an exhilarating program of jazz and contemporary dance, entitled “Up’s the Word: A Celebration in Jazz, Dance, and Poetry.”

Jonny Peiffer will lead his seven piece band Sojoy in an evening of jazz compositions, mostly his own. Influenced by the big bands of the past, Peiffer’s music showcases modern arrangements and a variety of instrumentation. With Sojoy, his contemporary, splendid little “Big Band”, Peiffer creates and performs music that inspires joyous movement, in his players and his audience.

Peiffer’s music provides the perfect ride for dancers of the Annex Dance Company. The band and the company blend together as they explore the parameters of jazz in sound and motion – from smooth and cool to swingin’ hot.

Sojoy is the creation of drummer/composer Jonny Peiffer. The hand-picked band of saxes, trumpet, trombone and bass has been wowing audiences wherever they go.

Before forming his own band, Peiffer was a popular pianist/drummer/percussionist. “I’ve performed in almost every venue in the seacoast, from the Buoy Gallery and the Dance Hall in Kittery to the historic Portsmouth Music Hall, in the Boston area at the Regent and the Coolidge Corner Theater, in New York City at Dance Theater Workshop, and many other venues in between.”

Peiffer put together his own band in 2014 to showcase his own music, and the resulting successful ensemble is testament to his multiple talents.

Kittery’s Annex Contemporary Dance Company joins Sojoy for performances of modern dance intermingled throughout the evening. Director Julie Hebb reflects the jazz influence in her choreography for her seven dancers. Her wide experience in contemporary training is evident in the vibrant performance of the company – a perfect fit for the swingin’ Sojoy sound.

The Dance Annex in Kittery is a professional studio providing a blend of a strong classical ballet foundation with contemporary offerings and varied movement styles. Director Hebb brings with her decades of experience performing, teaching, choreographing, and staging original ballet, jazz, and contemporary works in New York City, the greater Boston area and northern New England. Her dancers and choreography reflect her combining of traditional and modern dance.

Tickets are $18 in advance; $20 at the door; and $5 for students, and may be purchased online at ogunquitperformingarts.org.
