SANFORD — Earlier this summer, commuters may have noticed a large group of young people as they donated their time and energy on behalf of two charitable organizations.

Under the direction of Waban and the United Way, 71 students from Biddeford Middle School lined both sides of Route 4 starting at the rotary in Sanford and working their way toward Waban, beautifying the area by picking up trash and bottles.

Waban partnered with United Way of York County and the Biddeford Middle School to set up a Kids’ Day of Caring. Much like the familiar annual Day of Caring for company workers to give their time to a nonprofit, the day was meant to give students the opportunity to contribute to their community and truly make a difference.

Thanks to all their hard work, Route 4 is looking better than ever.
