BERWICK — A fire that ripped through a five-unit apartment building Sunday morning, injuring one resident, was started when a puppy knocked over a candle, according to the Berwick Fire Department deputy fire chief.
Dep. Chief Bruce Plante told the Bangor Daily News on Sunday that another man, who is deaf, was rescued from an upstairs apartment – firefighters had to kick in the door to rescue him and his cat.
In all, 10 people were displaced and the American Red Cross is providing assistance.
“Over the next several days, the Red Cross team will stay in contact with the families to provide financial assistance and community referrals, as they begin their road to recovery,” the Red Cross said in a statement.
Fire erupted in the 4 Berwick Road apartment building just before 4 a.m. Sunday.
The man who was injured was listed in good condition at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston Sunday.
