AUGUSTA (AP) — State officials are asking for the public to provide comments that will appear in this year’s Citizens Guide to the Referendum Election.
The state is facing a busy year for public referendums, with six questions appearing on the November ballot. Five are citizens’ initiatives and one is a bond issue.
The Maine Department of the Secretary of State publishes the citizens’ guide before every referendum vote. It’s a venue for residents, businesses, political action committees and other organizations to file comments in support of and in opposition to the measures on the ballot.
This year’s referendums include an act to legalize marijuana, a move to require background checks for gun sales and a push to create a ranked-choice voting system.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
