Anointing
In Psalm 133, living in harmony with others is likened to the anointing of Aaron. I try to imagine what it would be like to have warm, precious, sweetly scented oil poured on my head and running down into my collar. Surprisingly enough, I found the thought of it to be strangely soothing and comforting. Living together in community of spirit is both pleasant and pleasing to God. It is a rare and beautiful thing, fragrant as the oil of anointing. Anointing in today’s world is not quite as messy as it was in Aaron’s day. Nevertheless, it brings about healing and blessing as it strengthens us for our ministries. To live together in unity, not quarreling, but promoting one another’s welfare, is the kind of life intended by God for all his children. It doesn’t necessarily mean we have to agree on everything, but that we are united in serving Christ, proclaiming his message, and in reaching out into the community in his name. It is a state of being that is pleasant, not only to God, but pleasant for us and others as well.
