BUXTON — A Westbrook man is in jail this morning on felony charges after allegedly leading police on a high-speed chase along Route 22 (Long Plains Road) Monday night, forcing some cars off the road and crashing into two of them.
The suspect ran from the crash scene, according to Buxton Police, but was apprehended after a television news crew spotted a man fitting his description walking along Route 112.
Jon Doucette, 21, was armed with two knives when he was arrested, said Buxton Police Chief Troy Cline. He was charged with Class C felony counts of eluding a police officer and reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon (his vehicle), Cline said in a news release.
Doucette was also charged with numerous misdemeanor and civil traffic violations. He was held on $5,000 cash bail this morning at York County Jail.
Buxton Police attempted to stop Doucette’s 2009 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck on Long Plains Road at about 7:18 p.m. Monday. Doucette passed a line of cars stopped at the stop sign in an area known as Scarborough Corner, then made a right turn onto Long Plains Road without stopping at the intersection, police said.
Cline said Officer Warren Day tried to stop the truck to determine why it had been driving erratically, but the driver sped away before he could get a registration number.
While attempting to catch the truck, Day saw it force several vehicles off the road, Cline said. Dourcette then ran a red light at Route 22 and Narrasansett Trail (Route 202), he said.
Officer Galen Hall attempted to set up a spike mat on Route 22 in the area of Rocky Dundee Road, but before he could do so, the pickup truck sped by, almost striking him, Cline said. Doucette then struck a vehicle on Route 22 north of Route 112 and kept driving without stopping, according to police.
Day and Hall attempted to locate the truck, and received reports it had hit another vehicle on Saco Road in the area of Bonny Eagle Middle School. At that point, the driver got out and ran away. Witnesses pointed out his direction of travel.
In the meantime, Buxton Fire and Rescue arrived to assist those injured in the crash. Maine State Police and Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office deputies brought in police dogs to search for the man, but were unsuccessful.
While processing the crash scene, Cline said a WMTW Channel 8 news crew and another witness told police they saw someone fitting the description of the suspect on Route 112.
Doucette was located, arrested and taken to jail.
