“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, and of love and of sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7

Coping with Fear

Fear can be a friend or a foe. On the plus side it can alert us to impending danger which propels us to action, the “fight or flight” syndrome, a sudden response which serves to keep us safe from harm. Fear can be a motivator to move us to higher ground or spiral us downward into a world of darkness and despair. Our lives can be consumed with fears, fear of failure, fear of the challenges in the pursuit of success, fear of rejection, of change, of not being good enough, or of being alone. It can blind us to all the possibilities and opportunities that life has to offer. The world may appear to be a fearsome place indeed. The news reports are filled with enough scary stories to make one afraid to venture out the door. But someone once said that the words “fear not” or “do not be afraid” were mentioned in the Bible 365 times, and that’s a good daily reminder to put our trust in a loving God who watches over us. Do not be afraid. Let us just trust in Him and do what we can to make God’s world a better place to live in.
