Great Starts program subject of talk
The South Portland/Cape Elizabeth Triad group will meet on Thursday, July 21, at 2 p.m. at Thomas Memorial Library in Cape to get an overview of the Great Starts program, offered by the police departments in both communities, which provides a daily welfare check-in for area seniors. Under the program, participants must call in every day by a certain time. If the person does not call, dispatch will attempt to reach them and there is no response, a police officer will go to the residence to make sure everything is all right. This event is free and open to the public.
Programs for kids, grown-ups at library
The Thomas Memorial Library in Cape Elizabeth is offering another in its series of DIY craft nights aimed at adults. The next session will be held on Thursday, July 21, from 6:30-8 p.m. Participants will learn how to make ornamental mini-books.
Children’s author Liza Gardner Walsh is hosting another fairy garden workshop for kids on Friday, July 22, at 10:30 a.m. Participants will create their own fairy garden to take home. Pre-registration is required.
An introduction to weaving program for youth 12 and up will be offered on Monday, July 25, at 3:30 p.m. Local weaver Melian Mulherin will guide participants in making their own loom and starting their first project.
On Tuesday, July 26, 6:30-8 p.m., the library in Cape Elizabeth will host an outdoor concert featuring the Maine Marimba Ensemble, which plays captivating arrangements of traditional and contemporary Zimbabwean Shona music that’s sure to get everyone dancing and drumming.

Bird monitoring volunteers needed
On Saturday, July 23, 8-11 a.m., the Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center will hold its annual marsh-wide bird survey and volunteer birders are needed to help document the numbers of individuals and species. Depending on the assignment, surveys can be done on foot, by car or from a canoe.

Ferns walk set at Libby River Farm
The Scarborough Land Trust is offering a guided walk with naturalist Mike Windsor at the Libby River Farm on Saturday, July 23, at 10 a.m. Participants can see and learn about the abundant ferns found at the former farm. Kayak, canoe Scarborough Marsh
The Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center holds a guided kayak tour on Sunday, July 24, at 1 p.m. Participants can discover the wildlife and plants of the Scarborough Marsh while paddling the Dunstan River. Gliding through the marsh, participants will be exposed to its many inhabitants, from snowy egret catching fish to the mummichugs swimming in the water. A trained naturalist will also show off the numerous marsh plants, including the edible ones. The cost is $13 for members and $15 for non-members. Participants can bring their own kayak or use one provided by the center.
On Tuesday, July 26, the Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center is offering a sunset canoe tour of the marsh. Particpants should arrive by 7 p.m. The cost is $12 for members, $14 for non-members and $10 or $12 for children.

Calling all kid entrepreneurs
The Scarborough Public Library will host a session for kid entrepreneurs on Wednesday, July 27, at 3:30 p.m. The program is designed for kids in grades 2-5. Kate Gooding will show kids the steps they can take to turn an idea into a successful business. Pre-registration is required.
