BIDDEFORD — Emergency crews on Tuesday evening suspended the search for a missing person near Biddeford Pool, after reports that a swimmer had gone missing Tuesday afternoon. 

The search was suspended at about 8 p.m., Saco Deputy Fire Chief David Pendleton said to the press, stating that so far no one has been reported missing. 

Pendleton said earlier in the day a witness reading a book near the shore allegedly saw a man dive into the water but not come back out.

The call came in to emergency responders at about 3:30 p.m., Capt. Jason Wheeler of Biddeford Fire Department said. 

Crews from BFD, Saco Fire Department, Maine Marine Patrol and the U.S. Coast Guard conducted the search, with SFD deploying one boat and USCG lending two boats and a helicopter to the search efforts. 

Previously, Lt. Joe Carroll of SFD said he could neither confirm nor deny a person was actually missing. 

There is no word as to whether or not the search will continue in the morning.
