After a rocky start to the 2016 spring, the Biddeford softball team rebounded and had one of the best second halves in the state and beat the odds to take home the Class A State Championship in June.

One of the biggest reasons was catcher Brook Davis.

The sophomore slugger emerged midway through the season as the state’s best hitter, combining power and timely hits to help propel the Tigers into the postseason and into the state championship game against Skowhegan.

Davis finished the year dominating opposing pitchers, posting a batting average over .600 while also adding 11 home runs.

On top of a championship trophy, Davis also took home multiple accolades, including being named the Southwestern Maine Activities Association Player of the Year.

Davis also was a presence behind the plate, providing the Tigers with solid defense and signal calling. Davis was also named the SMAA first-team catcher.

Davis’ success was contagious in the Tigers’ dugout, according to coach Ray Magnant. “Brook impacted our team with her presence and her great attitude, she is a leader and makes everyone around her better,” said Magnant.

Magnant also felt that Davis’ accomplishments stemmed from hard work and a strong desire to improve as a player. Davis not only enjoyed personal success, but she also had fun competing with her teammates, many of whom are close friends.

“Brook’s work ethic at practice is unbelievable, I have never seen a kid that works so hard day in and day out to make herself better,” said Magnant. “She always gives a 150 percent and has fun doing it. She loves her teammates and loves this game.”

Much of Davis’ success also comes from hard work year around. Davis works hard to improve her craft every day and also helps those around her on the field. “In the offseason, Brook works with young kids at catching at softball clinics. The young girls love Brook and they all look up to her,” said Magnant.

She is also a hard-working student in the classroom at Biddeford High.

“Brook is a great student and works very hard in the class,” said Magnant.

Davis looks to finish her final two high school seasons strong, and Magnant hopes to see her continue to develop her game.

“I can’t say enough about Brook and what she has done the last two years for this softball team,” said Magnant. “I would like to see Brook just continue to get better every year … keep improving her game.”

Although the Tigers graduate five seniors, Davis should provide Biddeford with plenty of talent to defend its title.
