PORTLAND (AP) — Fire officials in Maine’s largest city say the level of fire danger will likely rise from moderate to high over the long holiday weekend.

The Portland Fire Department says the fire danger level is likely to rise because of a hot and sunny weather forecast for the weekend. They are reminding residents that purchasing and using consumer fireworks is prohibited by a city ordinance.

The Maine Forest Service says the danger of fire is moderate all over the state right now. The service rates fire danger on a five-step scale with “moderate” second and “high” third.

The fire department is also advising residents not to burn anything outdoors if winds are higher than 15 miles per hour and to always keep extinguishers on hand at the time of burning.
