Veterans Coffee Break
All veterans are welcome to stop in for the popular Veterans Social and Coffee, held each Wednesday at the Windham Veterans Center from 9-11 a.m. This weekly event has been well received. This week we had over 10 vets in attendance at various times. Come see what we are about.

Food Pantry news
Senior Pick-up Day in July will be Wednesday, July 6, from 10 a.m. to noon, because of the Monday holiday. The Food Pantry could really use donations of paper products (toilet paper, paper towels, napkins) and laundry and dish detergent right now. These and any other non-perishable food items can be dropped off Monday-Thursday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Thank you in advance.

Sunday Brunch
Sunday Brunch will be held on June 26 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 919 Roosevelt Trail, from 9 a.m. until noon. The menu includes pancakes, eggs, sausage, bacon, fresh fruit, donuts, coffee/tea/juice for $7 per person. Tickets will be sold at the door and meals are available to go. Proceeds will benefit Maine Special Olympics.

Free clothes
All men’s and ladies long pants/slacks will be free at the North Windham Church UCC thrift shop in July. Men’s suit jackets will be $1 each. Come to our cool shop on a warm summer day, Wednesdays and Thursdays at -3 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m.-noon.

Laughs & Stunts
On Thursday, June 30, from 1-2 p.m., the Windham Public Library and Windham Parks and Recreation are co-sponsoring this family-friendly program to kick off the summer. Free and open to all ages, it will be held at the Windham Middle School at 408 Gray Road. Steve Corning Entertainment promises to provide “non-stop entertainment, big laughs and huge stunts you won’t see anywhere else!” For more information, contact the Children’s Room of the library: 207-892-1908.

Medicare help?
On Tuesday, July 5, the Southern Maine Agency on Aging will offer a Medicare seminar at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church at 919 Roosevelt Trail. A “Welcome to Medicare” seminar is scheduled from 10 a.m.-noon. There also will be one-on-one counseling with volunteer Medicare advocates available from 9 a.m.-noon on July 5 and July 19. The seminar and counseling are intended to help you sort through your Medicare options, answer your questions and help you enroll. In addition to Medicare assistance, counseling on tax and rent rebate, food stamps and fuel assistance can be arranged. Call the Southern Maine Agency on Aging to register for an upcoming seminar or to make a one-on-one appointment with a medicare advocate at 396-6500 or 1-800-427-7411. Seminar walk-ins can usually be accommodated. Further opportunities for these services will occur monthly on the first and third Tuesdays at the same times and location. Book talk
On Tuesday, June 28, from 6-7 p.m., Maine author Monica Wood will speak and sign books at Windham Public Library. Her latest book is “The One-in-a-Million Boy,” a novel published in April of this year that has already sold foreign rights in seven European countries. Her recent play, “Papermaker,” was a popular Portland Stage Company production. Her memoir, “When We Were the Kennedys,” was chosen for several awards including the “Oprah” magazine summer-reading pick. She lives in Portland. No Legion meeting
American Legion Field-Allen Post 148 will not be hosting a Membership meeting in July. The next regular Post meeting will be Wednesday, Aug. 3. Meanwhile, if you need information, contact Mel Greenier at 892-4779.

Veteran Service Officer
Jerry Smith, Veterans’ Service Officer from the VA Lewiston Office will have office hours at the Windham Veterans Center on the second Wednesday of each month from 9 to 3 p.m. Smith previously covered the Windham Center for about 18 months before the arrival of Matt Haley as VSO. Haley has moved on to other VA-related support. The next office hours will be July 13. Smith may be contacted at 783-5306.

Civil War soldiers in Windham
Windham Historical Society will host the 3rd Maine Co. A, Infantry Volunteers Civil War Re-enactors Encampment at the Society’s Village Green June 25-26. The event is part of the town’s annual Summerfest celebration. The encampment will be open to the public on Saturday, June 25, from noon (after the Summerfest parade) until 6 p.m. and from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. on Sunday, June 26. Bean supper
A baked bean supper will be held on Saturday, July 23, from 5-6:30 p.m. at Windham Veterans Center, sponsored by the American Legion Post 148. The menu includes beans, salads and casseroles, hot dogs, desserts and beverage for $8. Under age 12 eat free! For more information, call 892-1306 or 892-7449.

Blood drive
On Wednesday, July 13, from 8 a.m.-1 p.m., a Red Cross Blood Drive will be held at the Windham Veterans Center, sponsored by Windham Veterans Association, VFW Post 10643 and Field-Allen American Legion Post 148, with support from Coldwell Banker Team Real Estate. Cancer support group
Windham Cancer Support Group will hold its monthly meeting at the library on Monday, June 27, at 6:30 p.m. The group will hold a yard sale on Saturday, June 25, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 3 Perennial Way, off Pope Road.

Chuck Whynot, Windham Service Officer of Field-Allen Post 148, center, was named State Service Officer of the Year at the 98th annual state convention of the American Legion held in Bangor June 17-19, Presenting the award is Department of Maine Service Officer Amedeo J. Lauria. At right is Whynot’s wife, Pam, president of the Windham American Legion Auxiliary. Other accolades and awards for Post 148 include: Post Excellence Award; Americanism Award; 100% Membership Award; first place, Newsletter; first place, Post History. Jeff Riddle, was named Educator of the Year and Curtis Merrill was selected District Commander of the Year. State Sen. Bill Diamond of Windham was recognized as Legislator of the Year.
