GORHAM — The Massabesic boys lacrosse team fell in their Class A South Quarterfinal matchup to host Gorham by a 20-7 score on Tuesday afternoon.

The No. 6 Mustangs started the game sharp, drawing first blood and taking a lead early on, however the No. 3 Rams would storm back in the second and third quarters to put the game out of reach.

Massabesic got two goals from Ethan Ouellette, Cam Roy and Kevin Nguyen, while Zion Mercado added one.

Massabesic coach Steve Gallo saw Gorham’s ability to move the ball as the difference Tuesday.

“(Gorham) is so good in transition, that’s the thing, they move the ball well. That’s why they’re so hard to prepare for, they move that ball better than anyone,” said Gallo.

The Mustangs finished last season in last place with an 0- 12 record – and Gallo has seen a number of improvements throughout the season.

“It’s been across the board, everyone has stepped up this year. To go from the worst team in the state last year to finishing No. 6 in the regular season and making the postseason … it’s definitely a number of goals checked off,” said Gallo.

Despite the loss, the Mustangs hope to build on this season’s success.

“We feel really good about this season, we are really proud of where we came from,” said Gallo. “We would have liked the win today and to keep moving forward, but we’re really happy with our season

… This is the spark, this was the first time these kids have really felt like contenders so I am sure we will do even better next year, I will almost guarantee it.”

In Saturday’s semifinals, the Rams will face the winner of today’s game between No. 2 Westbrook and No. 7 Biddeford.
