BIDDEFORD — Biddeford emergency medical services transported a woman to the hospital late Wednesday night after she reportedly had a drug overdose.

EMS arrived at an apartment on Sullivan Street about 11 p.m. and transported Hannah Courtois, 23, to Southern Maine Health Care in Biddeford, police said on Friday. Courtois was administered Narcan by an unknown person before emergency personnel arrived, according to police.

Biddeford Police Chief Roger Beaupre could not confirm what drug led to the overdose. However, he said he could “reasonably say it was an opiate” due to Courtois’ positive reaction to the Narcan, or naloxone, a medication that reverses the effects of opioids and is often used in overdose cases.

Courtois was out on bail for a previous arrest for operating under the influence and crashing into the Paquin & Carroll building on Main Street on Jan. 29, according to Deputy Chief JoAnne Fisk.

She was interviewed by police at the hospital and issued a summons for violation of conditions of release, which include the stipulation that she not use or possess illegal drugs.

“We are trying to encourage her to seek treatment,” Beaupre said Friday. “We try to encourage treatment with all these overdose cases. We always have.”
