I am writing out of a profound sense of sadness at the death of Patten White. Although I did not know Pat well, I feel a real sense of loss to our community with his passing. He was a wonderful and kind man who made a great impression upon me.
Pat met with me some months ago when I was learning about the lobster industry as a new state representative and member of the Legislature’s Marine Resources Committee.
He invited me to his home, and spent an afternoon answering my questions and being most patient with me. He was warm, kind and very instructive. I left his home feeling a lot more knowledgeable about the lobster licensing system we were about to consider in committee.
I had more confidence in my new position because of that meeting, and because I knew Pat was just a phone call away whenever I had a question. I will always be grateful to him for the knowledge and counsel he imparted, and I will miss his wisdom as I consider future votes.
He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
