KENNEBUNK — The visiting Cape Elizabeth girls tennis team pushed past Kennebunk/Wells 4-1 on Friday afternoon.

The Rams lone win came from Rosemary Campanella, who won her singles match 6-3, 6-3. Jenna Kuun fell in her singles match 6-1, 6-1, while Charlie Bigbee fell 6-0, 6-0.

Kennebunk/Wells’ doubles team of Olivia Hiken and Amelia Nelson fell 6-1, 6-0, while the second pair of Anna Kate Luddy and Grace Mastrangelo lost 6-0, 6-0.

Despite the loss, Kennebunk/ Wells coach Peter Leon has been pleased with his young team’s progress, as the team is in a rebuiulding year. Many of the Rams players are not only freshman, but are also novices in the sport.

“The girls have learned a lot and have picked up a lot of the necessary skills, but they’re going up against some veteran schools. You see that they’re continually getting better, next year will definitely be a great year,” said Leon.

Although the Rams have made steady progress, they are still trying to perfect the basics.

“The need to continue to work on their footwork, they need to keep developing their forehand and backhand. A lot of the basic strokes need to be worked on,” said Leon.

As the players have developed, Leon has also been noticing improved numbers in their matches, despite what the scoreboard may indicate.

“They have all been doing well, they have all had good games. The scores do not reflect the amount of runs they have gone on in a lot of these matches,” said Leon.

Although the Rams are a young team, they are led by a handful of more experienced players, such as Campanella.

Campanella was proud of the way her team competed against a stout Cape Elizabeth squad and has tried helping the younger players along the way.

“I think we did really well today, Cape Elizabeth is a really strong team. We are a young team, but we have really grouped together and the team has worked out. The older players have been helping the younger ones,” said Campanella.

The Rams are a work in progress, so in the meantime Campenella sees these tough matches as learning opportunities for Kennebunk/Wells.

“I think it may be a while before we start winning matches, so I think the goal right now is to go out there and see how well we can do,” said Campanella. “We haven’t had many practices recently since we have been going match after match, but I think while we get more experience we will start winning some matches.”
