T he Earth has changed its seasons again. Every morning, I step outside to enjoy the hypnotic beauty of nature. I love the light of springtime and the brilliant hues in the garden. Also, summer in Maine is a mixed blessing of abundant beauty and busy activity.

Every morning, there is a surprise. The spring flowers awakened early this year. Despite the rainy month, dazzling yellow daffodils are decorating our community with bright color and motion. If it is raining, the gardens will be lush. New plants raise their colors every day. Part of the excitement is not knowing what is coming up when.

I grew up in an agricultural landscape. My father had field after field of gardens. He grew everything that would survive in the New England climate. Gardens, apple orchards and grape vines were everywhere. Grapes were tricky except for Concord grapes. He sold produce in his store. I am thinking, that was organic, many, many years ago!

The landscape of childhood transports us to a caravan of memories. A garden must be cultivated and worked at. It is also a time of weeding, battling garden pests and disease, fertilizing and watering. Gardens roam and grow.

Spring opens its heavy doors and meanders toward the garden. Short, flirty red tulips and hot pink tulips have peeked out of the shadows. I can hear the breathing of the daylilies as they lift their bodies out of the ground. The silver, feathered grass sways in the breeze. Purple, magenta and blue-purple irises begin to grow in the sun. By the end of May, spring truly exits. Again, nature will renew itself with warmth. As spring becomes summer, the dependable lilac will decorate the landscape and court us with its sweet scent.

There is another kind of new life. The Maine Right to Life Committee is announcing its new site.

MRLC is the state affiliate of the National Right to Life Committee, a statewide nonprofit corporation. MRLC was founded to protect and uphold the dignity and worth of each human life from conception to natural death. It seeks to uphold the sanctity from conception to natural death by making abortion, infanticide and euthanasia socially, ethically and legally unacceptable, and to actively promote positive alternatives.

The MRLC’s new site features a variety of educational components, including information concerning: chronology of human development, alternatives to abortion, information regarding a pregnancy help line, abortion risks and more.
