ST. PETERBURG, Fla. — Toronto Manager John Gibbons says he was trying to inject some humor into a tense situation and had “no malicious intent” in his comment that “maybe we’ll come out wearing dresses tomorrow” after the Blue Jays lost 3-2 to Tampa Bay on Tuesday night because of baseball’s new rule on breaking up double plays.

Gibbons said before Wednesday’s game with the Rays: “I cannot understand how it would offend anybody, to be honest with you.”

He added: “It doesn’t offend my mother, my daughter, my wife, who have a great understanding of life. I do think the world needs to lighten up a little bit.”

The AL MVP was unable to run out a grounder, limped back to the dugout and was replaced at third base in the bottom of the inning.

YANKEES: Manager Joe Girardi says the team decided not to file a protest with Major League Baseball over the disputed call that led to Tuesday’s loss to Houston.

With the score tied in the eighth inning, Carlos Correa reached on a dribbler that New York reliever Dellin Betances threw over first baseman Mark Teixeira as Jose Altuve scored the go-ahead run from second. Girardi argued that Correa should have been called out for running in fair territory.

Revere left Monday’s game after four innings after feeling discomfort on a swing.

ANGELS: The team placed left-hander Andrew Heaney on the 15-day disabled list with a flexor muscle strain.

Heaney felt tightness in his left forearm after pitching six innings Tuesday in a 6-1 loss to the Cubs.
