York County Senior College has announced its spring class schedule. Classes begin the week of March 21 and most run for eight weeks.

Saco classes are given at a variety of locales throughout the area, including the Trinity Episcopal Church, the Wardwell, the Hazelton House and the college office. Most Sanford/Springvale classes take place at the Anderson Learning Center, with one sited at the Springvale Library. Additional classes are offered in Alfred, Biddeford and Kennebunk.

On Monday afternoons, students can learn about the “Shakers of Alfred” from instructors Lloyd and Sue Hunt in a two-week class presented at Alfred’s Shaker Museum.

Tuesday mornings will find seniors at the Biddeford Pool Center, where Robert Fiore will guide beginners and practitioners through experiences in “Yoga for Mind and Body.” Those wanting to find a different path to calmness can join Adele Millette for four “Meditation for Relaxation” classes in Saco.

There are three courses from which to choose on Wednesdays in Saco. “Introduction to Oil Pastels” is a new addition to the art lineup at Senior College. Performance art is presented the same morning by Tom Bankroft in “Jazz Vocalists,” a historical look at singing. In the afternoon, Russ Carlson, along with adviser Dan Philbrick, invites students to learn the background of “Beer!” Visits to local breweries are part of the class curriculum.

Art and history continue in Saco on Thursdays, with Pat Wood’s “Let’s Do Watercolors,” a popular class for veteran painters, in the morning and a trip through the local landscape in Dr. Joe Yuhas’ “Natural History of Southern Maine” in the afternoon. Those wishing to attend classes in Springvale will find a variety of classes. Returning to Springvale Library on Wednesday mornings is “Bring a Book to Breakfast,” Arlene Jackson’s class focused on a variety of reading materials aimed at provoking thoughtful and often humorous, discussions.

There are three class options on Friday mornings. Marjorie Hey will teach newcomers to “Play Go,” a game designed to stimulate thought and enhance your life. Dr. David Moberg’s “Open Art Group” welcomes beginners and advanced artists to come together and work in their own media. Returning as a selection this year is the popular “Writing Your Memoires,” a way to capture and share your legacy under the guiding hand of Fleurette Bannon.

Following one of Senior College’s pot-luck lunches, learners can choose between two afternoon classes. Brother Albert Heinrich illuminates history and practice in “Facts and Myths of Islam.”

And ever said “the book is better than the movie”? Take “Books, Movies and Talk,” a companion to the Saco class, where discussions on four different books will be led by instructors Dr. Cynthia Mowles, Ted Hargrove, Fran Halamandaris and Anne King.

Prospective students can register by sending in the forms received in the mail. Anyone needing a registration form can call 282-4030. Forms are also available on the YCSC website: http://yorkcountyseniorcollege.org. Registration closes March 11.
