KENNEBUNK — The Kennebunk boys and girls skiing teams enjoyed a successful campaign this past season, capping of the year with strong all-around performances at the Maine High School Ski Championships at Mt. Abram in February.
At the state championship, the Kennebunk boys place seventh out of 17 school, scoring 145 points while the girls placed sixth out of 16 with 150 points.
The Rams also had many athletes enjoy personal success, especially at Mt. Abram, where multiple skiers finished in the top 30.
Lydia Corcoran led the way for the girls, finishing in ninth place. Garrett Trufant finished 11th for the boys, while teammate Liam Nelligan finished close behind him at 26.
The Rams experienced many differences this year compared to seasons prior, including a new division and less snow. Kennebunk coach Patricia Woodbury was proud of the way her team adapted and performed.
“Kennebunk changed to the Western Maine Conference this year and we were anxious to see how we would compete in that conference. The racers showed their competitiveness and performed well each race,” said Woodbury. “Though the lack of snow didn’t allow us to get as much time on hill as we would have liked, we were able to capitalize on our opportunities.”
Woodbury attributed her team’s success to their willingness to work hard and take risks.
“They were willing to listen and go out of their comfort zones to become better racers. I’m very proud of the hard work and dedication they displayed this season,” said Woodbury.
When assessing her team’s top performers, Woodbury felt that they led by example, working hard to improve and be at their best by the time they hit the slopes at Mt. Abram.
Perhaps Woodbury’s proudest feeling was seeing her team step up against the competition. Woodbury was pleased to see her skiers prove that they have what it takes to compete with the best.
“I’m very proud of their performance this season. They were dedicated to getting better and it showed,” said Woodbury. “They were able to get a lot of time on snow which allowed them to ski at a high level. They were able to show that they can compete with some of the stronger teams in the state.”
