From the Journal Tribune: “With a snip of the scissors through a pretty pastel yellow ribbon, the new Cancer Care Center of York County officially opened its doors Thursday with a long crowd of hundreds looking on. One of them was Elizabeth Choate of Kennebunk. She’s a breast cancer survivor. The center, which opened for business earlier this week, is a collaboration between Goodall Hospital, Southern Maine Medical Center and Maine Medical Center in Portland.”

50 years ago

From the Biddeford-Saco Journal: “Mrs. Celina Corbin, described as “just like a bunny, the way she hops in and out of bed,” by an unofficial of the Trull Nursing Home, celebrated her 105th birthday yesterday at the May Street Biddeford home. Mrs. Corbin, a native of Fort Kent, was born on March 2, 1861 and came to Biddeford in 1901. She has seven children. She also has 49 grandchildren, 108 great-grandchildren and 30 great-great grandchildren. Mrs. Corbin spent a good part of her day saying her Rosary and listening to nurses read mail from her relatives and friends.”

100 years ago

From the Biddeford Daily Journal: “Since receiving bids for the section of state highway in the city of Saco which will be built this year the commission has decided that the chance of finishing that section of state highway prior to July will be much more certain if this section of road is divided into two contracts; consequently, the commission has arranged to split this section of road into two parts and have awarded a contract to Forgione-Romano of Portland, to whom the contract for the adjoining section in Scarborough was awarded on Feb. 23 for 1.4 miles of the Saco contract at a contract price of $12,777.12.”
