From the Journal Tribune: “Sporting matching blue winter caps and bunches of blue balloons, St. James School students paraded down Graham Street to City Square Tuesday afternoon. The parade, which had been postponed one week due to inclement weather, was one of many activities hosted by the school in celebration of national Catholic Schools Week, which occurs the week of January 30. This year’s theme emphasized the virtues of character, compassion and value.”

50 years ago

From the Biddeford-Saco Journal: “The Biddeford City Council passed a school budget appropriation of $664,495.45 last night after a net sum of $773,312 was requested by the board of education. Council members pointed out that this was an increase of $30,000 over last year. The reduced school budget was passed by 7-4 vote.”

100 years ago

From the Biddeford Daily Journal: “At the Olive Rebekah lodge last evening, the entertainment took the form of various simple but brain testing stunts. Names were pinned on people’s backs and they had to find out by some means whose they were. Then, with lights turned down a grip containing an assortment of articles was passed around for handling; then the lights were turned up and each wrote a list of what was in the grip. Pictures were taken with a spook and home-made candy was passed.”
