CORNISH — A 34-year-old Sanford man died this morning when the 2003 Dodge Caravan he was driving crossed the center line on Sokokis Trail (Route 5) and struck a pickup truck head-on.

Dead is Paul Goodwin. The driver of the 2012 Dodge pickup truck, William Loring, 44, of Parsonsfield, was taken by Limerick Rescue to Maine Medical Center in Portland with injuries York County Sheriff William King described as serious.

The crash, which occurred near the intersection of Route 5 and Spur Road, was discovered by Deputy Darren Cyr around 8 a.m.

King said a preliminary investigation shows Goodwin was headed south when he crossed the center line into the path of the truck, which was traveling north.

Both men were the sole occupants of their vehicles. They were both wearing seatbelts, said King.

The crash is being reconstructed. King said it is not known why Goodwin crossed the center line.

Route 5 was closed for about three hours this morning as a result of the crash.
