John Butler of Acton was charged by York County Sheriff ’s Office deputies Monday following a three-month investigation by Sgt. Mathieu Nadeau. The investigation came after some members suspected improprieties with the post’s finances over the past year, said York County Sheriff Bill King.
Nadeau’s investigation allegedly shows that that approximately $1,900 of the post’s money was diverted into Butler’s personal bank account, King said in a prepared statement.
King this morning said it appeared Butler had co-mingled the post’s funds with his own.
Deputies summoned Butler Monday. He is scheduled to make his first appearance at York County Superior Court in Alfred Feb. 15.
A Class C felony carries a maximum prison term of five years.
King praised Nadeau’s handling of the investigation. The department formerly had a detective’s division, but no longer has personnel solely devoted to detective work, so investigations must be carried out along with day-to-day rural patrol responsibilities, King said.
