From the Journal Tribune: “Local fire officials are crediting the quick response by nearby Sanford Fire Department for preventing the spread of a barn fire to an attached 1800s farm house and ell on Fox Farm Hill Road. The home is located in rural North Berwick, at the intersection of Fox Farm Hill and Hammond roads, about 10 miles from the town center. Sanford is about three miles away.”

From the Biddeford-Saco Journal: “Attorney John. F. Xaphes of 304 Alfred St., today announced his candidacy as a Republican candidate for mayor in the December elections. Xaphes, who was city treasurer during the 1963- 63 Willie Pomerleau administration, is unlikely to be opposed during the Republican city primary next month and will face the Democratic nominee.”

From the Biddeford Daily Journal: “Much interest is being taken in the water rate hearing before the public utilities commission at Old Orchard tomorrow and it is expected that there will be a big attendance. … Regarding the matter of water charges, these petitioners claim that residents at Old Orchard are compelled to pay a much higher rate for the same service than other localities.”
