Firefighters from several York County communities and beyond fought structure fires at homes in Newfield and Lebanon Wednesday.
Occupants of the singlefamily home on Maplewood Road in Newfield were outside when firefighters arrived; the mobile home in Lebanon was vacant.
One of the occupants of the Newfield home sustained what were described as minor injuries, as the individual attempted to reenter the structure. Newfield Emergency Management Director and firefighter Tom Johnson said no one required transport to the hospital.
The Newfield fire was reported to firefighters early afternoon. Because of the location, crews had to truck in water. Responding were crews from Newfield Fire Department, Newfield Rescue, Limerick, Shapleigh, Ross Corner Fire Company and Wakefield, New Hampshire Fire Department.
Johnson said the home was saved, but extensively damaged and unlivable at this juncture. He said he believed the home may be able to be repaired.
The fire is under investigation by the Maine Fire Marshal’s Office. Johnson said it is suspected to have been accidental.
Crews in Lebanon were called to a vacant mobile home on Lower Cross Road at about 7 a.m. Wednesday. Lt. J.T. Harmon said crews from Lebanon Fire and EMS found a single wide mobile home with two additions fully involved when they arrived, and a shed in close proximity. Crews requested mutual aid from Sanford Fire Department, which responded with an engine.
“Due to the lack of manpower and distance to a water source, a second alarm assignment was requested,” Harmon wrote in a news release. “Crews began using tankers to shuttle water from the town hall fire pond on Upper Guinea Road to the fire scene. This was a four mile round trip. Due to a shortage in manpower, a third alarm assignment was requested.”
Harmon said crews had the bulk of the fire extinguished at 7:48 a.m. He said an excavator was called and assisted with tearing down the remaining parts of the building. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office.
