That is the message from Strategies for a Stronger Sanford, a group that has been meeting for a year to plan how to help the neighborhood help itself.”

From the Biddeford-Saco Journal: “Preparations to close the plant were under way at the Saco-Lowell, New England Division of Maremont Corp. in Saco today as a strike deadline of tomorrow at midnight approached. … In effect, the plant is preparing for a shutdown.”

From the Biddeford Daily Journal: “The opening of the bids for the construction of the shoe shop building in Saco, which was to have taken place tomorrow at noon, has been postponed until next Monday at noon. The building committee decided on this action as it was believed that not sufficient time had been granted for a thorough inspection of plans and specifications by those who desired to make bids.”
