A fire Wednesday morning evacuated a University of Southern Maine dormitory.
“Robie-Andrews Hall on our Gorham campus was evacuated this morning due to a fire in a student’s room on the second floor,” Christopher Quint, university spokesman, said in a statement Wednesday. “The resident is unharmed and there are no injuries.”
Gorham Fire Department responded to the scene. Fire Chief Robert Lefebvre said an electric floor-model fan caused the fire.
The fire was extinguished and students were allowed to return to the residence hall. Lefebvre said at noon Wednesday there was a lot of smoke and soot and he said the room where the fire occurred was not habitable.
“USM is grateful for the wise actions of our student who unplugged the fan, left the room, closed the door, and immediately called for help,” Quint said.
Quint said damage was minimal.
