SACO — Maine Molecular Quality Controls plans to expand its business in a new building in Saco next year.
Maine Molecular Quality Controls is a global designer of unique quality controls, according to a press release from the company. The company, according to its website, “designs and markets molecular controls for use in inherited disease testing, infectious disease detection, and pharmacogenetics.”
The company broke ground last week at the city’s Mill Brook Business park off Route 1. The building is expected to be completed during the first quarter of 2016, said spokeswoman Jillian Kanter of Broadreach Public Relations.
Maine Molecular Quality Controls is currently located in a 6,200-square-foot building in Scarborough, and has 10 employees.
The proposed energy efficient product development and manufacturing facility in Saco will be 16,000 square feet, and enough land has been purchased in the business park to expand the business 32,000 square feet in the future, according to the press release.
The upcoming state-of-the-art facility will allow the company to quadruple its production and employ 10 more people, according to the press release.
“It takes a village to raise a child, and it takes a community to raise a business. We were fortunate to find the support we need here in Maine,” said Joan Gordon, president of MMQCI in the written statement. “We wanted a place to foster creativity, teamwork and fun; what better place than in Saco, where you’re not only close to the turnpike, but also on the Eastern Trail.” Gordon said the company will provide bicycles for employees to use on the trail.
There are currently 8 of 10 lots available at the Mill Brook Business Park, said Economic Director William Mann in a phone interview. The city is “ecstatic” that Maine Molecular Quality Controls chose Saco for its new location, he said.
“As our flagship building for the Mill Brook Business Park, they are setting the bar very high for new occupants and we applaud them for being the first kid on the block with this energy efficient and aesthetically pleasing building,” said Mayor Don Pilon in the written statement.
