OLD ORCHARD BEACH — The Old Orchard Beach Surge (14-19) took down the Road City Explorers (18-14) with a final score of 5-4 on Wednesday night at The Ballpark to continue their win streak.

The Surge took an early lead, scoring two runs in the first inning. Tucker White, John Ascenzia and Joe Coyne loaded up the bases with back-to-back-to-back singles. A wild pitch from Explorers pitcher Dan Bartlett would allow White to score. Will Benenson would pick up an RBI.

Road City would tie the game 2-2 in the second, with a run scoring due to a bases-loaded catcher interference call. Phillip Rowland would also pick up an RBI single.

The Explorers would take a 3-2 lead in the sixth, with an RBI single from Marcus Bradley. But the Surge would get the run back thanks to an RBI single from first baseman Chris Williams, tying the game 3-3.

Zach Leitten would take over the mound for the seventh, ending the night for starter Scott Heath. Heath allowed 10 hits, three runs, three walks and struck out four. Leitten provided one inning of relief, allowing three hits, one run, two walks and striking out one.

The Surge would take a 5-3 lead in the seventh, with Coyne and Benenson each picking up RBIs.

Jairo Gomez would come to the mound for the Surge in the eighth. The Explorers would pick up a run after a bases loaded HBP, making it 5-4 in favor of the Surge. Gomez would give up one hit and strike out three in the inning.

Surge closer Luis Pardo would come in for the ninth, again shutting down the opposing team’s offense. He allowed no hits, struck out two and walked one.

Despite the win, the Surge were outhit 14-10. The Surge offense was led by Coyne, newcomer Ascenzia, and Sandy DeLeon with two hits each. Benenson led the team with two RBI.

The next Surge home game is tonight at 7 p.m. for the series finale against the Road City Explorers. Tomorrow night is Hall of Fame Night, where we honor members of the Maine Athletic Hall of Fame.
