SACO — A traffic stop resulted in the arrest of a Biddeford man allegedly in possession of more than $13,000 worth of illegal drugs.
On Monday at around 10:15 a.m. on Main Street, a Saco police officer noticed a southbound black sedan run a red light at the intersection of Main and Beach Streets, according to a press release from Deputy Chief Jeffrey Holland. The police officer stopped the black 2007 Chevrolet Impala driven by Megan Maietta, 31 of Biddeford. Riding in the car was Joseph Eugene Clark, 31, also of Biddeford, according to Holland.
As part of the traffic stop, the officer requested identification from the man riding in the car with Maietta, but he was unable to provide any, and said his name was Joseph Leo Clark. Clark said he had lost his Georgia identification card, according to Holland.
The name “Joseph Leo Clark” could not be found on file in Maine or Georgia records, and the officer suspected the passenger was trying to conceal his identity, according to Holland.
Police discovered there were three active warrants in Cumberland County for failing to appear and failing to pay unpaid fines for a Joseph Eugene Clark. When pressed by an officer, who told him that failure to provide his correct name and date of birth could result in his arrest, Clark continued to give the information he originally provided. Clark was detained until his identity could be verified, said Holland.
Clark was searched and police found 98 grams of heroin and 25 grams of ecstasy in his possession, whereupon Clark verified that he was Joseph Eugene Clark, according to Holland. Police seized a scale, cell phone, several hypodermic needles and a small amount of cash from the car, said Holland. The value of the drugs is estimated to be $13,500, said Holland.
Clark was arrested and is charged with aggravated trafficking of scheduled drugs, unlawful trafficking in scheduled drugs, and refusing to provide name and address. Clark was unable to post bail and was transported to the York County Jail, according to Holland. He is scheduled to appear in York County Superior Court on Aug. 21 at 8:30 a.m., said Holland.
The vehicle operator, Maietta, was summonsed for failing to stop at a red light and failing to produce evidence of insurance, according to Holland.
