Saco police are warning drivers to expect significant delays Wednesday and Thursday as a section of Route 1 is closed to traffic.

All northbound traffic on Route 1 in Biddeford will be diverted from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday because of a road construction project. Saco police Sgt. Chris Hardiman said the detour will likely cause significant delays in both cities.

Northbound traffic will be diverted down Main Street in Biddeford to Main Street (Route 9) in Saco.

“We’re expecting some pretty heavy traffic delays both of those days,” Hardiman said. “If people can look for alternative routes, that would be best.”
