SANFORD — The Sanford Mainers blew open a close game with a five-run eighth inning to down the visiting Vermont Mountaineers, 8-2, Friday night at Goodall Park.
The Mainers led 3-2 heading into the frame, then sent nine batters to the plate to pile on a quintet of insurance runs. Dan Hetzel drove in Trae Theodore for the first run, then David Schanz and Shaine Hughes both hit two-runs singles to combine for four unearned runs off Vermont reliever Austin Foote.
Dalton Thomas put the Mainers up 2-0 in the third with a two-run home run. The Mountaineers tied the game up 2-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, but Hughes belted a solo home run in the seventh to regain the lead for Sanford.
Aaron Casper earned the win with 2 2/3 innings in relief of Sanford starter Joey Abraham, who went the first 4 1/3 innings. Casper didn’t allow a hit during his outing while striking out four batters.
