BIDDEFORD — Sonia M. Martel, 72, of Biddeford, died Monday, June 15, 2015 at Gosnell Hospice House in Scarborough after a short battle with cancer.
She was born in Biddeford on Sept. 24, 1942, the daughter of Henri and Blanche I. Garneau Pare. She was educated in Biddeford schools and graduated from the former St. Joseph High School with the class of 1961.
On Feb. 8, 1964, she married Paul D. Martel in St. Joseph Church, Biddeford.
Sonia was a homemaker. She volunteered many years at The Stone Soup Pantry kitchen in Biddeford.
She is survived by: her husband of 51 years of Biddeford; three sons, Daniel P. Martel of Biddeford, Michael A. Martel and his wife Lisa of Biddeford, and Jason B. Martel of Biddeford; a daughter, Selene Labbe and her husband Shawn of Arundel; a brother, John Pare and his wife Alice of Biddeford; two sisters, Hilda Frechette of Biddeford, and Constance Buchanan and her husband Larry of Biddeford; seven grandchildren, Aaron, Sarah, McKenzie, Michael, Matthew, Morgan, and Melandi; and several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be Thursday, June 18 from 3-7 p.m. at Hope Memorial Chapel, 480 Elm St., Biddeford, ME 04005.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, June 19 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Church in Biddeford. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Biddeford.
Memorial donations in Sonia’s name may be made to The Stone Soup Pantry, P.O. Box 186, Biddeford, ME 04005.
