SACO — Second-seeded Thornton Academy was pushed to the limit by No. 7 Falmouth, but the Trojans hung on for an 8-6 victory in a Western Maine Class A softball quarterfinal Thursday.

The Yachtsmen scored two runs in the top of the first on three straight hits against TA starter Bailey Tremblay.

The Trojans answered by doubling up Falmouth with a four-run frame. Kaylee Burns, Kaya O’Connor and Keira Fitzgerald all tallied RBI singles as Thornton sent nine batters to the plate against Falmouth pitcher Julia Treadwell.

Falmouth tied the game up in the top of the third, only for TA to go back up by one in the bottom half. Single runs were scored in the next two half innings to tie the game then put the Trojans back up by one, 6-5, in the fourth.

Maizie Lee doubled home O’Connor in the fifth to give Thornton a 7-5 lead that would stick. Tremblay singled home Libby Pomerleau in the sixth for an insurance run.

Pomerleau, O’Connor, Lee and Fitzgerald had two hits apiece for the Trojans, who collected 11 hits as a team off of Treadwell.

Tremblay allowed six hits ”“ three by Falmouth leadoff hitter Madeline Rouhana. She struck out five and walked two.

NO. 6 NOBLE 6, NO. 3 SANFORD 4

SANFORD — Sixth-seeded Noble scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to upset No. 3 Sanford, 6-4, in a Western Maine Class A softball quarterfinal Thursday.

The teams scored two runs each in the third and fourth innings of a close game.

Morgan Perillo hit a two-out, two-run home run against Sanford pitcher Jen Jones in the seventh for the winning margin.

Tyler Chastney got on base in front of Perillo by reaching on an error. She also singled in a run in the third inning, while Perillo’s blast made up for strikeouts in each of her previous three at-bats.

Melodie Bailey and Mackenzie Aleva hit RBI doubles for the Knights.

Morgan Wilson hit a two-run double in the third for Sanford, and Nicole Main did the same in the fourth to account for all of the Spartans’ offense.

Jones struck out 12 batters and walked four during a complete-game effort.

Shaughnessey Gower scattered 11 hits on the mound for Noble, including stranding Jones at second in the bottom of the seventh after a one-out double.

Baseball

NO. 3 SOUTH PORTLAND 4, NO. 11 BIDDEFORD 3, 8 INNINGS

SOUTH PORTLAND — Underdog Biddeford nearly pulled off another playoff upset, and another upset of favored South Portland, but the Tigers’ postseason run came to an end with a 4-3 loss in eight innings in a Western Maine Class A quarterfinal Thursday.

The third-seeded Red Riots jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, then rode the back of ace pitcher Henry Curran for the first five innings until the No. 11 Tigers finally answered in the top of the sixth.

Nick Conley paced a three-run frame with an RBI triple as Biddeford took a 3-2 lead.

The Red Riots tied the game up in the bottom half of the inning, as Sam Solomon hit an RBI single.

Biddeford had chances to regain the lead, but it left the bases loaded in the seventh and stranded runners at first and second in the top of the eighth.

South Portland then loaded the bases in the bottom half of the eighth and Sam Troiano was hit by a Brady Crepeau pitch to win the game for the Red Riots.

Troiano had opened the scoring on a Matthew Beecher double in the first inning. Solomon finished with three hits for South Portland.

Nate Huot led Biddeford with three hits, while Casey Twomey and Kerry Crepeau each had two. Huot pitched the first seven innings for the Tigers.

NO. 5 LINCOLN 9, NO. 4 WELLS 2

WELLS — Lincoln Academy scored eight runs over the final three innings to rally past Wells in a big way, 9-2, in a Western Maine Class B quarterfinal Thursday.

The fifth-seeded Eagles trailed 2-1 heading into the fifth inning, then went ahead 4-2 with a three-run frame. They then scored two in the sixth and three more in the seventh to bury the No. 4 Warriors.

The Eagles got three hits each from John Henry, Sawyer Pinkham and Andy Hutchins. Pinkham also pitched a complete game while holding Wells to just four hits.

The Warriors took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but were held in check by Pinkham the rest of the way.

Dan Quint had a pair of hits for Wells. Charlie Bell got the start on the mound and pitched the first five innings.
