BIDDEFORD — Biddeford held off a strong effort from underdog Massabesic, as the fourth-seeded Tigers walked off with a 3-2 victory over the No. 12 Mustangs in a Western Maine Class A softball game at Doran Field Wednesday.

The Mustangs, who earned the final playoff spot in the Western Class A tournament and upset No. 5 South Portland in the prelims Tuesday, took a 2-1 lead in the fifth on an RBI single by Sarah Guimond and a bases-loaded walk drawn by Sarah Howe.

Biddeford tied the game up in the bottom of the frame as Jocelyn Moody singled home Ailaina Keely.

The same sequence came up again in the bottom of the seventh, with Keely on third base and Moody up to bat. Moody collected another base hit to drive in Keely for the winning run.

Upset-minded Massabesic had its chances, including loading the bases in each of the last three innings. But Biddeford starter Kirsten Lebreux and reliever Abbie Paquette limited the damage and got out of the jams.

Guimond was the hard-luck loser for the Mustangs, as she gave up eight hits over seven innings.

Amber Magnant singled home Brittany Roy to put Biddeford up 1-0 in the bottom of the second. Paquette finished the game with three hits for the Tigers, who move on to Saturday’s semifinal round.
