SCARBOROUGH – On Tuesday Scarborough voters turned down the nearly $46.8 million school budget for the new fiscal year, with the vast majority of those voting saying the spending package was too high.
The vote was 1,719 against and 1,408 in favor. When answering the question whether the spending was too high, acceptable or too low, 1,761 of the voters said the budget was too high.
With the failure of the school budget, a new town-wide referendum must be scheduled and the Board of Education and the Town Council must go back to the drawing board to create a new spending package.
