Happy Birthday

Music with a Mission

On Friday, May 1, at 7 p.m., the University of Southern Maine Chamber Singers, under the direction of Dr. Robert Russell, will perform in concert at the North Windham Union Church. Tickets will be sold at the door and are $12 for adults and $10 for students, children, and seniors. The box office opens at 6:15. Church Supper

Friends Church, Route 202, Windham is hosting a baked bean supper on Saturday, May 2, from 5-6:30 p.m. Baked beans, brown bread, salads, pies, coffee and punch will be served. $7 for adults and $1 for children under 12.

Community Garden

On Saturday, May 2, at 10 a.m., a “Welcome to the Garden” meeting will be held for anyone interested in becoming a member of the gardening community. The meeting will be held at Windham Public Library, downstairs. Garden beds are still available. Learn how to grow your own produce. Open House

On Monday, May 4, a ribbon cutting and Open House will be held at 10 a.m. at the Lakes Region Senior Center, Little Falls Activity Center, 40 Acorn Street, Gorham. Join in the celebration of the seniors’ return to their original site. Public invited. Refreshments will be served.

Medicare Help

On Tuesdays, May 5 and 19, the Southern Maine Agency on Aging (SMAA) will offer Medicare help at the Lakes Region at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church at 919 Roosevelt Trail, Windham. A “Welcome to Medicare” seminar is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon. In addition to the seminar, there will be one-on-one counseling with volunteer Medicare advocates available from 9 a.m. to noon. Call the Southern Maine Agency on Aging to register a seminar or to make a one-on-one appointment with a Medicare Advocate at 396-6500 or 1-800-427-7411. Seminar walk-ins can usually be accommodated.

Legislators at Patman’s

Sen. Bill Diamond and State Representatives Mark Bryant and Patrick Corey will be at Patman’s Redemption Center and Convenience Store located on Route 115 in North Windham on Saturday, May 9, from 10 a.m. to noon to meet the public, answer questions and listen to concerns regarding issues being debated in the state legislature. Store owner Craig Thorne invited the three Windham legislators to be at his store to give his customers an opportunity to discuss issues and find out what’s going on in the state legislature. All are encouraged to stop by to say hello and give an opinion.

Democrats Meet

The Windham Dems will hold its regular meeting Monday, May, 11, from 7-8 p.m. at the Windham Public Library. All Democrats are welcome and encouraged to attend. Now is the time to start planning for the 2016 elections.

Shred Your Documents

On Saturday, May 9, Windham School Age Child Care Program hosts a document shredding day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Home Depot parking lot. Suggested donation is $5 for a file size box. Any amount can be handled. All documents will be shredded on site.

Electronic Recycling

On Saturday, May 9, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Windham Hill United Church of Christ will hold an Electronic Waste Recycling Event. This event is open to all communities in the area and will be held at the Windham Mall. Enter at Veterans Memorial Drive next to Friendly’s.

All monetary donations are used to cover cost of organizing the event and to fund support of local missions for our community. They will recycle the following items: TVs all sizes, computers and monitors, hard drives, laptops, printers, cordless phones, cell phones, VCR, DVD audio equipment, stereos, speakers. Prison Tour

See what happens behind the walls at Maine Correctional Center. A tour will be held on Friday, May 22, from 1-4 p.m. First come first serve – there will be limited capacity for the tour. Depending on interest there may be additional tours. Tour participants should be at least 18 years old, not have any friends or family incarcerated, and consent to running background checks and arrive with proper IDs. Anybody interested should call 893-7000 and ask to speak with Paryse Thibodeau in the Warden’s office OR 893-7010 for the direct line.

Legion Meets

American Legion Field-Allen Post 148 will hold its next monthly meeting on Wednesday, May 6, at the Windham Veterans Center. There will be a 5 p.m. social/dinner followed by a 6 p.m. business meeting. The meeting is a busy one with the instillation of officers for 2015-16 and the annual work party to make up the flags for the highways and byways of Windham. Come early for the working party if you can. Doors will be open at 4 p.m.

Mayfair

Mayfair at Windham Hill UCC will be held from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday, May 30. Mayfair features a craft show and sale from H.O.M.E. Co-op, plants unlimited, a baked goods sale, gently used furniture, the kickoff of a great raffle, children’s games, a luncheon (hot dogs, sandwiches, mac & cheese, drinks, desserts), and tour of the church.

American Legion Field-Allen Post 148 will recognize those veterans who have passed away this last year and have connections to Windham, with the Tolling of the Bell Ceremony at the upcoming Memorial Day Ceremony, Saturday, May 25, at 10 p.m. in front of the Windham High School at the Veteran’s Memorial. The Post has maintained a list of veterans who had an association with Windham (born, lived, worked, etc.). The list covers the period from May 1, 2014 to end of April 2015. Please review the list below to ensure that your veteran and loved one will be recognized. Bean Supper

A baked bean supper will be held on Friday, May 29, from 5-6:30 p.m. at the Windham Veterans Center. This is a fundraiser to help maintain the WVC building, which is used by dozens of community organizations. The menu includes baked beans, casseroles, salads, bread, biscuits, rolls, pie and beverages. Tickets are $8 in advance, $10 at the door. Children 10 and under are free. Bingo at Veterans Center

You are invited to play Bingo provided by Standish Memorial Post 128 at the Windham Veterans Center. The fifth season starts Tuesday, May 5, and continues through October on every Tuesday. Doors are open at 4 p.m. and the Early Bird game starts at 6:10 p.m. with the regular games starting at 6:30 p.m. There are 14 regular games besides the Early Bird game plus the Winner Take All game. Pull Tabs are also available. Partake of refreshments, soft drinks and coffee for sale by the Windham Field-Allen Post 148 Auxiliary. Enjoy a relaxing night knowing all proceeds go to benefit veterans and their families.
