Music with a Mission

On Friday, May 1, at 7 p.m., the University of Southern Maine Chamber Singers, under the direction of Dr. Robert Russell, will perform in concert at the North Windham Union Church. This concert is the 24th in the Music with a Mission series sponsored by the North Windham Union Church. The church donates a portion of the proceeds to area nonprofits.

The first 23 concerts have provided over $20,000 for mission support to the church and other community organizations. The community proceeds from this concert will help cover the Chamber Singers’ travel costs as they are preparing for their annual tour, which this year includes a series of concerts throughout Croatia.

Tickets will be sold at the door and are $12 for adults and $10 for students, children, and seniors. The box office opens at 6:15. The North Windham Union Church is located at 723 Roosevelt Trail in Windham. For more information please call 892-7149 or email MWAMconcerts@gmail.com.

Gunpowder Mill Tour

On Saturday, April 25, the Windham Historical Society will present its annual tour of the historic Gambo Gunpowder Mill, beginning at 9 a.m. at the society with a program about the history of the mill and a 1 p.m. guided walking tour of the site. There is no admission fee, but a $5 donation for each event would be appreciated. Be sure and ask about the books about the mills and maps available at the Society, too! Maine Horse Jubilee

The Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals on River Road in South Windham will be taking part in the national celebration of the ASPCA Help a Horse Day on April 26 and competing for a chance to win $10,000 to assist with its efforts to protect Maine horses that have been abused or neglected. To celebrate the day, the Society is holding the Maine Horse Jubilee, from 1-3 p.m., which will feature an array of fantastic activities, including a horse training demo by horse expert Deb Little, a presentation by award-winning photographer Helen Peppe, farrier demos, an MSSPA mascot naming contest, a technical large animal emergency rescue demo, and much more! The event is free and family friendly.

Church Supper

The Friends Church on Route 202 is hosting a baked bean supper on Saturday, May 2, from 5-6:30 p.m. Baked beans, brown bread, salads, pies, coffee and punch will be served. $7 for adults and $1 for children under 12.

Medicare Help

On Tuesdays, May 5 and 19, the Southern Maine Agency on Aging (SMAA) will offer Medicare help at the Lakes Region at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church at 919 Roosevelt Trail, Windham. A “Welcome to Medicare” seminar is scheduled from 10 a.m.-noon. In addition to the seminar, there will be one-on-one counseling with volunteer Medicare advocates available from 9 a.m.-noon. Call the Southern Maine Agency on Aging to register a seminar or to make a one-on-one appointment with a Medicare Advocate at 396-6500 or 1-800-427-7411. Seminar walk-ins can usually be accommodated. Veteran Information Needed

American Legion Field-Allen Post 148 will recognize those veterans who have passed away this last year and have connections to Windham, with the Tolling of the Bell Ceremony at the upcoming Memorial Day Ceremony, May 25, at 10 p.m. in front of the Windham High School at the Veteran’s Memorial. The post has maintained a list of those veterans who had an association with Windham (born, lived, worked etc.) The list covers the period from May 1, 2014 to the end of April, 2015. Please review the list below to ensure that your veteran and loved one will be recognized. Cancer Support

The monthly meeting of the Windham Cancer Support Group will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, April 27, at the Windham Public Library. Nicole Heanssler will be the speaker. She is health system manager for hospitals, of the American Cancer Society. She will discuss old and new programs, and answer any questions you may have. Spaghetti Dinner

On Saturday, April 25, Windham’s 4-H club will hold a spaghetti dinner from 4:15-6 p.m. at Highland Lake Grange No. 87 at the corner of Hardy Road and Route 302. Request from Food Pantry

It’s spring, and summer is right around the corner. The Windham Food Pantry would like to request donations to help Windham’s children and their families get through the summer months. Items needed: peanut butter, jams/jellies, tuna fish, pasta sauce, macaroni & cheese, snacks, and juice boxes.

Welcome to the Garden

On Saturday, May 2, at 10 a.m. a “Welcome to the Garden” meeting will be held for anyone interested in becoming a member of the gardening community. The meeting will be held at Windham Public Library, downstairs. Garden beds are still available. Learn how to grow your own produce. Shred Your Documents

On Saturday, May 9, Windham School Age Child Care Program hosts a document shredding day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Home Depot parking lot. Suggested donation is $5 for a file size box. Any amount can be handled. All documents will be shredded on site.

Alumni Banquet

Deadline is May 8 to sign up for Windham High School Alumni Association’s 104th annual banquet, which will be held on Saturday, May 16, at Windham Middle School. Doors open at 4 p.m., dinner served at 6 p.m. Cost is $12 per person.
