SOUTH PORTLAND – All school bus drivers in South Portland are expected to follow the rules of the road, Superintendent of Schools Suzanne Godin told the Current Friday.

She added, “We also expect all employees will interact appropriately with the community.”

Godin’s comments follow news reports that a school bus driver with the South Portland School Department was summonsed this week by the Portland Police Department for failing to use the proper caution when passing a bicyclist.

Godin said the incident, which occurred at approximately 7 a.m. on Thursday, April 16, happened while one of the bus drivers, Leon Spear, was picking up students currently living at a Portland homeless shelter.

Although the students live at a Portland shelter, they’ve been assigned to the South Portland schools.

On Friday Godin confirmed that an internal investigation will be conducted, but said, “as this is a personnel investigation I’m not at liberty to (give) specific details.”
