WASHINGTON (AP) — Police arrested a man who landed his small, one-person helicopter on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol Wednesday, prompting a temporary lockdown of the Capitol Visitor’s Center.
The man’s identity and motive were not immediately known. Capitol Police identified the aircraft as a “gyro copter with a single occupant.”
House Homeland Security panel Chairman Michael McCaul, R-Texas, said the pilot landed on his own, but that had he made it much closer to the Capitol authorities were prepared to shoot him down.
The situation was under investigation and streets in the area were shut down. The small craft presented a strange sight sitting on the green lawn of the Capitol, its rotors slowly spinning.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
