NRC of Maine director receives recognition

AUGUSTA — Lisa Pohlmann, executive director of the Natural Resources Council of Maine, recently received distinction from the National Wildlife Federation, one of the country’s largest national conservation organizations, for her work protecting Maine’s environment.

The Women in Conservation Award is presented to women that have shown exceptional leadership and dedication to issues related to conservation and climate action. Pohlmann was applauded for her contributions to efforts that reduce carbon emissions, promote clean energy, and protect wildlife and their habitats from risks posed by climate disruption.

“I am privileged to be working every day to protect and restore the beautiful nature of Maine, and honored to be recognized by the National Wildlife Federation for this work,” said Pohlmann. “Women’s voices and involvement have been essential to progress on clean air and clean water, and there are thousands of women across the country now determined to see state and federal action on climate change as well.”

In her role as head of the leading advocacy organization in Maine working to address climate change, Pohlmann has demonstrated strong leadership, working with other state groups and national partners like NWF. In particular, Pohlmann has been an important voice in support of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Power Plan, which is designed to reduce power plant carbon pollution, the single largest contributor to climate change.

“Lisa has a deep passion for the environment and a strong history of advocacy for the people of Maine. Her leadership and integrity have strengthened Maine’s conservation movement and helped protect the clean water, air and natural resources that our wildlife and our families depend upon,” said NWF President and Chief Executive Officer Collin O’Mara.

Bowdoin dean named to foundation position

BRUNSWICK — Bowdoin College Dean for Academic Affairs Cristle Collins Judd will be heading to New York City at the end of the summer to take on new senior responsibilities at the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

College President Barry Mills made the announcement last week in an email message to the Bowdoin community. He called the appointment a “truly wonderful opportunity” for Judd, whom he praised for her extraordinary service to the college. “It is difficult to overstate Cristle’s accomplishments and her contributions to Bowdoin,” said Mills.

Judd, who has served as Bowdoin’s academic dean since 2006, will join Mellon on Sept. 1 as senior program officer in the foundation’s Education and Scholarship in the Humanities Program. In this role, she will play a key role in maintaining and strengthening the relationship of the foundation with higher education leaders, in its grant-making activities in higher education, and in meetings and policy discussions regarding liberal arts colleges and research universities.

“We are delighted that Cristle Collins Judd has elected to join the Mellon Foundation as a senior program officer,” said Mellon Foundation President Earl Lewis. “A noted scholar, experienced administrator, accomplished leader, she knows both the liberal arts college and research university worlds, which we deem an invaluable asset. We know she will richly enhance the foundation’s work.”

Mills pointed out that, given the timing of Judd’s departure, it will be up to Bowdoin’s president-elect, Clayton Rose, to name Judd’s successor. According to Mills, Rose expects to announce his plan for doing so in the near future.
