Gorham Town Manager David Cole handed town councilors on Tuesday his proposed $13.1 million municipal budget, up 5.4 percent from this year’s $12.4 million.

The budget would raise the tax rate 30 cents per $1,000 of valuation. The Cumberland County tax would hike Gorham’s tax rate another 5 cents.

The Gorham School Committee was to vote Wednesday on a school budget that would jump the tax rate 85 cents per $1,000 of valuation, according to School Committee Chairman Dennis Libby on Tuesday. The School Committee vote came after the American Journal deadline on Wednesday.

Superintendent Ted Sharp in February proposed a Gorham school budget up $1.2 million. Preliminary figures then indicated the spending plan for the fiscal year beginning July 1 would rise to $35.3 million, up 3.4 percent from this year’s $34.1 million, which included a first-ever all-day kindergarten.

Under the proposed figures in the combined municipal and school budgets, the tax rate would jump up $1.20 per $1,000 of valuation, meaning a tax increase of $240 on a home assessed at $200,000.

Cole said the municipal budget would be discussed in a Town Council workshop at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 14, in the Gorham Municipal Center, 75 South St.

The Town Council and Gorham School Committee will hold a joint budget workshop at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 19.

Municipal and school budgets require Town Council approval, and the school budget additionally needs validation by town voters in a referendum.
