Tate House offers a day devoted to chocolate

Tate House Museum will host a Boston Chocolate Ramble to Boston on Sunday.

Attendees will travel by bus, departing at 8:30 a.m., to board the Boston Chocolate Trolley for a three-hour ride that combines chocolate education and chocolate treats at three hotels.

The last hotel is the site of a chocolate buffet featuring all manner of desserts.

The trolley will then drop off travelers in the North End at Captain Jackson’s Chocolate Shop, run by the Old North Church, for a talk on how chocolate was processed in Colonial times and to sample a Colonial chocolate drink.

Cost of the outing is $125 per person.

Proceeds will benefit the museum.

Kate Flora will give talk at library about her books

Author Kate Flora will speak at a Brown Bag Lecture Series at noon Wednesday at Portland Public Library’s Rines Auditorium at 5 Monument Square.

Flora will discuss her latest books, “Death Dealer” and “And Grant You Peace.”

Historian of Civil War to discuss the 9th Maine

The Eliot Historical Society will sponsor a talk by Ben Smith at 7 p.m. Monday at the John F. Hill Grange Hall on State Road.

Smith, a Civil War historian of the 9th Maine, will detail the assault on Battery Wagner, a bloody campaign led by the 54th Massachusetts all-black regiment that has been immortalized in the film “Glory.”

The second wave of the assault on the battery was led by the 9th Maine and Col. Sabine Emery, an 1858 Colby graduate who died in 1868 as a result of wounds suffered in that battle.

Smith also will detail his challenges to locate Emery’s burial spot, which he discovered at Eastern Cemetery in Portland, and his efforts to have a soldier’s stone installed at the cemetery.

Biologist will discuss lynx in Merryspring presentation

Wildlife biologist Jennifer Vashon will lead a presentation at noon Tuesday at Merryspring Nature Center about the status of Canada lynx in Maine.

While these cats are plentiful across the border in Quebec, they have been on the Endangered Species List in the United States since 2000.

Tuesday Talks are open to the public for $5, and are free for Merryspring members.

The education center and park are located at the end of Conway Road just off Route 1.

Dancing With Local Stars to benefit Wayfinder Schools

The seventh annual Dancing With Local Stars competition begins at 7 p.m. Friday at the Camden Opera House.

This event pairs midcoast celebrities with professional dance instructors who take the stage together to show off their best dance moves, as well as performances by professional dancers, all in support of Wayfinder Schools.

Tickets are $30 for adults and $10 for children ages 12 and younger, with prime seating available for $50.

Bridgton Hospital will host its biannual Books Are Fun fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday in the main entrance of the hospital.

A large selection of children’s storybooks, cookbooks, inspirational and religious books, stationery and music will be sold.

A percentage of sales from this event will benefit the Employee Emergency Assistance Fund, which awards dollars to Central Maine Medical Family employees (including Bridgton Hospital staff) experiencing financial hardship.

Brick Store party to mark first manned spaceflight

The Brick Store Museum will celebrate the 54th anniversary of the first manned spaceflight in history from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at 112 Main St.

Yuri’s Night: World Space Party will commemorate the flight taken by Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin on April 12, 1961.

Events for the evening include a retro-themed dance party (Space Race-era costumes encouraged), pop-up exhibits, a photo booth and a star-gazing tour with the Astronomical Society of Northern New England.

The public is invited to a Skype visit with astronaut Chris Cassidy at 6 p.m. Friday to learn more about the history of NASA and its plans for the future.

Road race on Sunday to support scholarships

The Race to Educate 5 and 10K Road Race will start at 10 a.m. Sunday at the Waterhouse Pavilion in Kennebunk.

Race routes will wind through town, with Olympian Jenny Thompson starting the race.

Live music will be provided by the band Old Soul, and there will be goodie bags, race shirts and lunch.

All proceeds from the race will directly benefit scholarships to the Cocoons Day School.

Library group to present wildlife event for families

Friends of the Scarborough Library will host a family event with Wildlife Encounters animal ambassadors at 2 p.m. Saturday at Scarborough Middle School, 21 Quentin Drive.

Designed for children ages 4 to 12, with an adult, the session will feature animal handlers from the Wildlife Encounters organization, who work with rescued animals that were injured, abandoned or displaced.

This hands-on experience will include interaction with “exotic” animals of various sizes. Admission is free.
