BIDDEFORD — The University of New England received goals from a dozen players on the way to a 22-5 Commonwealth Coast Conference women’s lacrosse victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology on Wednesday evening at the Big Blue Turf.

With the decision, the Nor’easters (3-5) move to 1-0 in conference matches while the Leopards (2-2) fall back to 0-2 in CCC action.

Big Blue tallied the first six goals and led 10-1 after 21 minutes, before three unanswered by WIT cut the gap to six. UNE notched the next 12 to pull away until Wentworth concluded the scoring with less than 30 seconds left to play.

Gina Newsome, Rachel Schwaner and Brooke Kelleher all registered three goals for the Nor’easters, with Macki Hill, Nikki Smith, Kimberly Gosselin and Paige St. George each adding two. Newsome and Gosselin were both credited with three assists.

UNE, which logged a 39-13 advantage in shots, also got one goal, two assists, four draws and three caused turnovers out of Hannah Warren. Jolena Lampron contributed five ground balls and forced three more turnovers.

Lauryn Huck, Maddy Ouellette and Courtney Kendall combined for five stops defending the UNE cage.

For the Leopards, Molly Dufresne found the back of the net twice. Robyn Pacini made nine saves and picked up seven ground balls between the pipes.

BIDDEFORD — Nick Parent tallied his lone marker of the day with 2:33 left in double overtime to give Wentworth Institute of Technology an 11-10 Commonwealth Coast Conference men’s lacrosse win over the University of New England on Wednesday afternoon at the Big Blue Turf.

The Leopards (5-2, 1-1 CCC) saw their five-goal cushion disappear in the last 16 minutes of regulation, and survived a shotless (0 for 5) first overtime period before Parent capitalized on the only shot attempt of the ensuing extra session.

The Nor’easters slip back to 4-4 overall and 0-1 in league play.

UNE never trailed in the opening half, though there were four ties. Big Blue finished the first frame ahead 3-1, but the score was knotted at 5-5 by intermission.

Michael Cushera, who had found the back of the cage three times during the initial 30 minutes, began the third stanza with another marker to put Wentworth in front for the first time, 6-5. Alec Paradis then rattled off three straight in a span of 4:18 to bump the gap to 9-5, and Jake Ollila made the spread five with 2:28 left in the third.

UNE, which was out-shot in the middle two periods by 28-14, got one back just before the end of the segment on a goal by Dan Auger to make it 10-6.

Sam Cloutier pulled the Nor’easters to within 10-8 by the 8:16 mark of the fourth, before Andrew Curro and David Rubenstein completed the five-goal run that returned the contest to a tie.

The Leopards received a goal and two assists from Ryan Coakley and Tim Parlato tallied game-highs of six ground balls and four caused turnovers. Adam Dufault posted 14 saves to secure the victory for WIT, which came up on the short end of a 42-39 margin in shots.

After Cloutier’s four goals for Big Blue, Auger had two scores and two assists. Curro and Rubenstein both added a pair of markers. Pat Reid registered a team-best five ground balls and Andrew Kelly recorded three caused turnovers.

David Pearson took the setback between the pipes for UNE, working the final 35:27 while logging six stops. John Dusel opened the match in goal, making nine saves in 30 minutes.
