MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS: One goal the Southern Midcoast Maine Chamber (SMMC) has for the year is to be more connected to our local communities. And one level of involvement or connection is within the educational sphere, especially at the grade and high school level. A longstanding program, Junior Achievement USA, is one such way to connect business people with the students in our community.

“Junior Achievement (JA) is the world’s largest organization dedicated to educating students in grades K-12 about entrepreneurship, work readiness and financial literacy through experiential, hands-on programs designed to help young people understand the economics of life. In partnership with businesses and educators, JA brings the real world to students, opening their minds to their potential.”

One program in the JA curriculum is “Our Region.” It will “analyze how entrepreneurs use resources and work with each other to produce goods and services in a community. It will recognize the skills, tasks and concepts that an entrepreneur must master to start a successful business.”

Stay tuned to the SMMC column for progress as a business person (volunteer) teaches the class. For more information or to become a teaching volunteer, please contact the JA MidCoast Maine Board Chairwoman Emily Hamilton at ehamilton@atlanticregional.com.
